What is quality? My (attempted) definition

Quality.jpg

Throughout my consultations, I will touch on “quality” several times. So what exactly do we mean? Is quality and cost directly related? Is absolute quality the same as perfection? Many people have their own ideas of quality and many definitions vary which shows this is not an easy question to answer.  But here is my attempt:

When talking only about apartments, I would start with: A good visual first impression. followed by an abundance of space, natural light and finish with craftsmanship and care. Somewhere in between I would mention the right to quiet enjoyment. Throw in your other senses: touch, smell, sound (I haven’t yet tasted a property). Quality must be attainable, sustainable and not a direct correlation of cost. Finally, quality must be ever improving.

When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.
